If you run Interstate 81 through Pennsylvania you’ll have two fewer places to park for the next 18 months or more as the Grantville rest areas on both sides of 81 — right before mile marker 79 northeast of Harrisburg — are closing for major reconstruction.

1 81 MapThe rest areas close Oct. 16 and construction is not expected to be complete until the summer of 2021.

PennDOT officials said they have notified smaller truck stops along I-81 to expect increased traffic.

When done, there will be more truck parking spaces available.

Kevin Stewart, president and CEO of the Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association, told WHTM-TV of Harrisburg, “When we lose something, particularly like the Grantville rest area, both sides at the same time, it’s going to make it challenging for drivers to find those locations.”

Other rest areas on I-81 in Pennsylvania include:

  • I-81 Northbound – Mile Marker 38
  • I-81 Southbound – Mile Marker 38
  • I-81 Southbound – Mile Marker 157
  • I-81 Northbound – Mile Marker 156
  • I-81 Northbound – Mile Marker 203
