Repair work continues on Interstate 55 in Louisiana following last week's horrific 158-vehicle pileup the claimed the lives of eight people and sent numerous others to local hospitals. Eighteen tractor-trailers were involved in the massive wreck.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development posted this update to Facebook:

Work started this weekend on the southbound lanes of I-55. There are no additional closures to note. Southbound lanes remain open, and they will taper into one lane near the site of Monday’s accident. Currently, the left lane is open. Once temporary repairs are complete in the right lane, it will open, and the left lane will close for repairs. The entire northbound portion remains completely closed.

The crash occurred Monday morning, Oct. 23 when the highway was covered by what officials said was "super fog" mixed with smoke from a nearby wildfire.  Several fire companies responded to extinguish numerous vehicle fires, including some that destroyed tractor-trailers.
