Briefly: Pilot trucker named 2024 Driver of the Year by AMTA

The Alberta Motor Transportation Association has honored a longtime trucker.

Pilot Flying J’s James “Jim” Tench has been named the 2024 AMTA Driver of the Year for his contributions to Alberta’s commercial transportation industry. He’ll receive the award during AMTA's annual award celebration taking place on April 9.

Tench has been driving trucks for 40 years and has been hauling fuel with Pilot Flying J for 16 years. He was previously recognized by AMTA as Driver of the Month in November 2024. 

This is the second year in a row a Pilot driver has received the honor from the AMTA. Graham Nkala was named the 2023 Driver of the Year.

Trucker found guilty of manslaughter in I-5 crash

A jury in Oregon Wednesday found a 54-year-old California tucker guilty of manslaughter in a 2023 crash on Interstate 5 that killed seven farmworkers.

Lincoln Smith was found guilty of seven counts of second degree manslaughter in the crash that occurred in May of 2023 when his tractor-trailer struck a van sopped along side of the interstate near Albany, which is about 70 miles south of Portland.

However, the jury found Smith not guilty of driving under the influence of intoxicants.Traces of methamphetamine, fentanyl and morphine were found in Smith’s blood later at a hospital.
