Trucking industry concerns will once again be on the agenda of the U.S. Senate this week, as its Subcommittee on Surface Transportation, Freight, Pipelines, and Safety holds a hearing on issues facing the trucking and motor coach industries.

The subcommittee will convene a hearing titled “Shifting Gears: Issues Impacting the Trucking and Commercial Bus Industries in the U.S.” Tuesday at 10 a.m. EST.

A notice from the subcommittee said this hearing will examine the trucking and motorcoach industries, with an emphasis on enhancing safety, reducing regulatory burdens, and ensuring the long-term viability of these essential transportation operators.

The hearing will also explore opportunities for meaningful regulatory and policy reforms, including consideration of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s regulations, workforce challenges, and enforcement and compliance requirements in the context of the next surface transportation reauthorization.

Testifying at the hearing will be:

  • Chris Spear, President and Chief Executive Officer, American Trucking Associations
  • Lewie Pugh, Executive Vice President, Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association
  • Fred Ferguson, President and Chief Executive Officer, American Bus Association
  • Sean O’Brien, General President, International Brotherhood of Teamsters

Announcing the hearing, subcommittee chairman Sen. Todd Young (R-Indiana) said,“The trucking and motorcoach industries are essential to Indiana’s economy and support thousands of Hoosier jobs. These drivers work long, demanding hours to keep our communities connected and our supply chains running. FMCSA plays a crucial role in ensuring safety on our roads while allowing these industries to thrive. This hearing is a chance to ensure policymakers pursue a thoughtful approach to legislating that strengthens our infrastructure, boosts economic growth, fosters industry innovation, and keeps America moving safely.”

The hearing will stream live on the committee web site and YouTube.
