Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 2, a rest area on Interstate 75 in Michigan will be closed until next May as it is rebuilt and improved.

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) announced it is investing about $3.9 million to rebuild and improve the Bay City Rest Area on southbound I-75 in Bay County. Work includes rebuilding the rest area facility as well as utility work, ramp grades and site work.

Rebuilding the rest area will provide travelers with safe and reliable facilities along the I-75 corridor in Bay County, according to MDOT. The parking lot and facility will be closed for the entire duration of this project.

"Across Michigan, we are moving dirt and fixing the damn roads to grow our economy, helping Michiganders go to work, drop their kids off at school and run errands safely," said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. "By the end of this construction season, we will have fixed, repaired or replaced nearly 24,500 lane miles of roads and 1,900 bridges, supporting thousands of good-paying, local jobs without raising taxes by a dime."
