Frito Lay driver takes home Georgia driving competition championship

A private fleet driver won the five-axle category and the grand championship of the recent Georgia Trucking Association's driving competition.

Tony Johnson, who drives for Frito Lay, took home the top honors for the competition held at Lake Lanier Islands in Buford, Georgia April 23 and 24.

The other specialty award winners were:

  • Rookie of the Year: Thomas Brownlow, XPO
  • Written Test Champion: Steve Elliston, Walmart
  • Pre-Trip Champion: Brent Darnell, Southeastern Freight Lines
  • Small Team Trophy: Old Dominion Freight Line
  • Large Team Trophy: Walmart Transportation

Individual class winners were:

  • 3-Axle: Chuck Pearson, ABF Freight System
  • 4-Axle: Joe Norris, Old Dominion Freight Line
  • 5-Axle: Tony Johnson, Frito Lay
  • Flatbed: David Price, Publix
  • Sleeper: Mark Cofer, FedEx Freight
  • Step Van: Matthew Futral, FedEx Express
  • Straight Truck: Daniel Arnold, FedEx Freight
  • Tanker: Steve Elliston, Walmart
  • Twins: Darren Isreal, XPO

The National Truck Driving and Step Van Driving Competition is Aug. 11-14 in Pittsburgh.
