William I. Moon, III
William I. Moon, III, 64, of Bettendorf, Iowa, the president of the Iowa 80 Group and CAT Scale Company in Walcott, Iowa died suddenly on July 16.
Mr. Moon was born August 10, 1961, in Kansas City, Missouri., to William I. Moon Jr. and Carolyn (Cusac) Moon. At four years old, Will moved to Walcott, Iowa, when his parents took over the Iowa 80 Truckstop.
Aside from running Iowa 80, and the CAT Scale company, Mr. Moon was devoted to the University of Iowa, from which he graduated in 1983.
Mr. Moon's online obituary said he "developed his love of Iowa 80 by following his dad around when he was just a little kid, pulling weeds, mowing grass, and later working on the fuel islands and in the tire shop all through college to save up to buy a used pickup truck."
The American Truck Historical Society said in a social media post, "Will stayed close to the drivers, operators, and enthusiasts who make up the trucking industry. Under his leadership, Iowa 80 became a destination celebrating its people, equipment, and culture, through the Iowa 80 Trucking Museum and the annual Walcott Truckers Jamboree."
Beth Goetz, director of athletics at the University of Iowa said, "Will was one of the kindest, most genuine people you could ever meet, and his love for the Hawkeyes was unwavering. His generosity and loyalty helped shape Iowa Athletics, but it was the relationships he built and the way he cared for others that will be remembered most. He was a dear friend and truly part of the Hawkeye family."
