Facebook 'Like'There is an anniversary today that most likely will not show up when you open your Facebook newsfeed today. But, without it, there would be no newsfeed to open.

It was 15 years ago today that Facebook was launched from a dorm room at Harvard University.

Today, the social media platform connects more than 2 billion people around the world, and among that number are many of this country’s 3.5 million professional truck drivers.

In fact, a recent survey of drivers by Truckers News found that Facebook is by far the social media platform of choice of truckers. Fully 63 percent of drivers said they use Facebook. That compares to:

  • 54 percent for YouTube
  • 15 percent for Instagram
  • 14 percent for LinkedIn
  • 13 percent for Twitter
  • 11 percent for Pinterest

A surprising result is that 18 percent of drivers said they use no social media platform.

When asked, “On a scale of 0 to 10 (where 0 = never and 10 = constantly), how frequently do you use these online network resources to get information about the trucking industry?” Facebook finished third. LinkedIn earned a rating of 6, Instagram was rated 5.1 and Facebook 5.

Regardless of what internet service they use, 65 percent of truckers in the survey are logging in on their smartphones, which are overwhelmingly — 70 percent — Android.
