Daimler Trucks North America has issued two separate recalls for certain Freightliner and Western Star trucks affecting nearly 28,000 tractors, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documents.

One recall by Daimler doesn’t affect truck performance, and is in response to the massive fire extinguisher recall from Kidde in November. In total, Daimler is recalling approximately 24,860 model year 2002-2017 Freightliner and Western Star tractors equipped with Kidde plastic-handle or push button “Pindicator” fire extinguishers.

Trucks affected by the recall include Freightliner Cascadia, Century, Columbia and Coronado models, and Western Star 4700, 4900, 5700, 5900 and 6900 models.

Owners of affected trucks will be contacted by Daimler, who will instruct the owners to contact Kidde for a replacement fire extinguisher. The recall is expected to begin Feb. 12.

Owners can contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712 with recall number FL-759, or Kidde customer service at 1-855-271-0773. NHTSA’s recall number is 17V-810.

The other recall issued by DTNA is for certain trucks with brake caliper mounting bolts that are not properly torqued. In these trucks, the calipers could detach, causing brakes not to work. This recall affects about 3,007 Freightliner and Western Star trucks. Affected models include:

  • 2018 Freightliner 108SD
  • 2018 Freightliner 114SD
  • 2018 Freightliner Cascadia
  • 2018 Freightliner M2 Business Class
  • 2018 Western Star 4700
  • 2018 Western Star 4900
  • 2018 Western Star 5700
  • 2018 Freightliner Custom Chassis S2C 106CAB
  • 2018 Freightliner Custom Chassis S2G

Affected owners will be notified by DTNA beginning Jan. 25. Dealers will inspect the bolts and replace if necessary. Owners can contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712 with recall number FL-758. NHTSA’s recall number is 17V-759.
