78-year-old man dead after 53-vehicle crash on snowy I-40 in North Carolina

Winter weather that hit North Carolina Wednesday led to a pile-up involving 53 vehicles on westbound Interstate 40 near I-85 in Nillsborough, which is located about 15 miles northwest of Durham.

One person was killed in the wreckage when a semi-truck slammed into the stopped traffic. The driver of that truck, William Crowell Kellam, 44, of South Carolina, was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and speeding. Jerolyn Day Wilson, 78, died in the collision.

Six people were taken to the hospital following the pile-up.
