Police stop latest Philadelphia meat cargo theft while in progress

Updated Mar 18, 2025

Police in South Philadelphia stopped thieves from walking away with $55,000 worth of beef in an attempted cargo theft earlier this week.

In the early mornin g hours of Tuesday, March 11, four suspects backed a box truck up to the back of a tractor-trailer parked outside a Sysco facility. The suspects started loading boxes of beef into the box truck, but in the process woke the sleeping tractor-trailer driver, who called police.

When the police arrived, the suspects fled in an SUV, leaving behind the box truck -- which had been stolen -- and the beef.

Police gave chase but did not capture the suspects.

The beef was returned to the tractor-trailer.

Philadelphia has been the scene of numerous cargo thefts since late last year.
