The Texas truck driver who last week set in motion a 28-vehicle chain reaction accident that killed four people and injured at least six others on Interstate 70 near Denver is due back in court later this week.
Rogel Lazaro Aguilera-Mederos, 23, of Houston, remains in the Jefferson County Jail on $400,000 bond. He is expected to be formally charged with vehicular homicide Friday, May 3.
Aguilera-Mederos was arrested Thursday, April 25, after his flatbed loaded with lumber slammed into the back of traffic stopped by an earlier accident. He was slightly injured in the crash and told police at the time of his arrest his truck’s brakes were not working as he descended a grade at some 80 mph.
A dashcam video shot by another motorist, Pedro Olvera of Denver, shows a white truck with a loaded flatbed speeding downhill not far from the crash scene, and passing a truck safety turnoff. Authorities have not confirmed the truck in the video is that of Aguilera-Mederos.
Meanwhile, authorities identified the four men killed in Thursday’s crash. They are:
- Doyle Harrison, 61, of Hudson, Colorado
- William Bailey, 67, of Arvada, Colorado
- Miguel Angel Lamas Arellano, 24, of Denver
- Stanley Politano, 69, of Arvada, Colorado
