Employment in the for-hire trucking sector dropped last month.

The Department of Labor’s monthly Employment Situation Report shows March’s 1,200-job decline was the first month-to-month drop since April of 2018 and only the second in the past 19 months.

Employment in the for-hire trucking industry totaled 1.5149 million in March, according to the DOL. That’s a gain of 28,500 jobs from the same month last year.

The U.S. economy as a whole added 196,000 jobs, and the unemployment rate was 3.8 percent.

The transportation and warehousing sector, the umbrella sector for truck transportation, added 7,300 jobs in the month. Among major freight-producing sectors, the construction industry gained 16,000 jobs in March, while the manufacturing sector lost 6,000 jobs.
