If you drive to or through Texas on a regular basis, expect to begin sharing the interstates with a different sort of vehicle: autonomous trucks.

Silicon Valley truck tech firm Kodiak Robotics has set up shop in Dallas and earlier this week announced it was making its first commercial deliveries between that city and Houston for a paying customer. The company said it “operates as a true freight carrier, with self-driving trucks operating on ‘middle mile’ highway routes.”

A statement from the company Tuesday, Aug. 6 said its trucks operate with a so-called “safety driver” at the wheel.

“We could not be more excited to announce our expansion into Texas, with an office in the DFW area,” said Don Burnette, CEO and co-founder of Kodiak Robotics. “In just over a year, we’ve gone from founding Kodiak to putting our trucks on the road and hauling freight for customers.”
