Automated transmissions: like them or not?

Automated transmissions: godsend or curse?

Here’s the question:

“If an entry level driver cannot master a manual transmission, then how will they be able to master backing a 53-foot long trailer into a dock with other trucks on each side?”

That was asked recently by Robert Peters, president of High Plains Contracting, a West Texas firm specializing in refrigerated hauling. It was asked in response to an article about automated transmissions being part of the remedy for the growing driver shortage by Jack Roberts in Commercial Carrier Journal.

(Read Roberts’ original column.)

Peters adds:

“If a young driver has difficulties with a manual, maybe he or she just needs more practice or maybe he or she just isn’t cutout to be a truck driver.”

Some folks agreed. Others didn’t. How do you feel about automated transmissions?
