Truck driver in NY state trooper’s death sentenced

The Canadian truck driver involved in an accident that killed a New York State Trooper was sentenced to three and a half years in jail Tuesday, Sept. 1.

Gary Blakely, 66, of Ridgeway, Ontario, Canada, was arrested in February and pleaded guilty in April to one count of aggravated criminally negligent homicide. He was uninjured in the crash.

In December of 2013, Blakely’s truck struck NY State Trooper David Cunniff’s car and another vehicle stopped on the side of the New York State Thruway (I-90). Cunniff was conducting a routine traffic stop on the side of the Thruway near Amsterdam, west of Albany, when he died in the crash.

Blakely was sentenced in Montgomery County Court Tuesday.
