Reminder: Operation Safe Driver Week starts Sunday

Be prepared for heightened traffic stops

Truck drivers on the road next week (Oct. 18-24) can expect to encounter heightened traffic safety enforcement as part of the annual Operation Safe Driver Week.

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) co-sponsors the week-long safety initiative to help minimize the number of crashes, deaths and injuries caused by crashes involving large trucks, buses and cars.

In  addition to increased on-highway inspections, law enforcement officers and transportation safety officials will host safety awareness programs to provide education on the subject to motor carrier organizations.

So drivers know what officers are looking for, the top five warnings and citations issued to commercial motor vehicle operators in 2014 were:

1. Speeding

2. Failure to use a safety belt

3. Failure to obey a traffic control device

4. Possession/use/under the influence of alcohol

5. Improper lane change
