In what it claims is a money-saving move, Connecticut’s Department of Transportation is cutting back hours of operation at several interstate rest areas beginning today, Friday, Sept. 30.
A statement from the department says:
- rest areas along I-84 in Willington and Southington will be open and staffed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m
- a rest area on I-95 in North Stonington will be open and staffed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m
- rest areas on I-91 in Middletown and Wallingford will be open and staffed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- a rest area along I-84 in Danbury will be staffed 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
During off hours, parking is allowed but buildings that contain restrooms, vending machines, and highway information will be closed. CDOT said portable toilets would be available when the buildings were locked.
The agency said the cutbacks will save it $2 million.
