A former commercial vehicle inspection station on a heavily traveled highway in Ontario, Canada has been made into a parking area.
The provincial government worked with local counties to create the lighted parking area on westbound Highway 401 in Gananoque northeast of Kingston. It includes eight truck parking spaces and spots for other vehicles. There is a portable washroom on-site.
The Ministry of Transportation said the new rest area provides a safe place for commercial vehicle drivers to stop and take a break, combat fatigue, inspect their vehicles, and wait out poor weather conditions.
“I’m proud to be part of a government that is committed to improving road safety in all parts of the province,” said Jeff Yurek, minister of transportation. “Adding this rest area is an important step to making this part of the highway safer for all commercial vehicle drivers and road users.”
