The Georgia Department of Transportation today closed Interstate 16 from Exit 71 to Exit 78 because a large dump trailer was elevated and struck the GA 86 bridge shifting in some 6 feet.

GDOT said the bridge is located west of US 221/GA 56 Exit. The agency said there is no timeline for reopening. GDOT said it continues it is evaluating the situation.

Detours have been created by GDOT:

  • Westbound Detour: Take Exit 78- Turn Right onto Highway 221 North, Left onto US 80 West, go through town of Adrian, Left onto State Route 15, Re-Enter I-16 at Exit 71
  • Eastbound Detour:Take Exit 71 – Turn Right onto Highway 15, through Soperton, Left onto State Route 46, Left onto State Route 56, Re-Enter I-16 at Exit 78

Given traffic volumes, the Georgia DOT also encourages motorists to find a totally alternate route beyond this official detour.
