Truckers who travel between Illinois and Kentucky can expect traffic delays starting early next week.
The Illinois Department of Transportation recently announced lane reductions will take place on the mile-long bridge carrying Interstate 24 over the Ohio River to Kentucky in Massac County beginning, weather permitting, Monday. One lane will always remain open in each direction, according to IDOT.
To accommodate the work, I-24 traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction to install a temporary concrete barrier along the centerline. Width restrictions will be in effect.
Motorists can expect delays during peak hours and should consider alternative routes to avoid the area. The nearby Brookport bridge has a weight limit of 15 tons and is closed to semi traffic. The bridge is restricted to 8 feet wide and 9 feet, 6 inches tall.
IDOT suggests truckers use the U.S. 51 Ohio River Bridge at Cairo, Illinois, in the west—about 36 miles away on Kentucky’s side or 58 miles away through Illinois.
The I-24 bridge lane reductions will be in place through Oct. 14. The times of future restrictions will be announced as the overall $38 million project continues. The work is expected to be completed in 2027.
A statement from IDOT said drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs and message boards in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices, and be alert for workers and equipment.
