Two people died and nine others were hospitalized with injuries following two collisions on southbound Interstate 95 in South Carolina earlier this week.

The two crashes involved a total of 16 vehicles and occurred Tuesday afternoon, July 21, near mile marker 40 in Colleton County located about 50 miles west of Charleston.

South Carolina Highway Patrol said the first collision, which occurred at about 4:30 p.m., involved three vehicles, including one commercial motor vehicle. The second collision occurred a short time later at the scene of the first crash, involving 13 vehicles including six tractor-trailers.

Authorities report there were heavy thunderstorms at the time of the collisions, which caused reduced visibility for drivers.

A statement from the Colleton County Fire-Rescue said one tractor-trailer was hauling sheets of plate glass which was expelled onto the highway. "Responders had to work around broken glass, in some areas two feet deep," according to a statement from the CCFR.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues its investigation.
