A tractor-trailer driver from Texas was arrested last week following a traffic stop by the Michigan State Police for driving violations on the Mackinac Bridge.
During the stop, MSP said it discovered the driver, who MSP identified as 54-year-old Eric Koroscik of Kingwood, Texas, was in possession of numerous illegal weapons and was committing multiple additional violations.
The five-mile-long Mackinac Bridge connects Michigan's two peninsulas. It carries some 4.2 million vehicles a year.
A statement from the MSP said on March 25 at about 6:48 p.m., a motor carrier officer from the St. Ignace Post was conducting proactive patrol on the Mackinac Bridge when a tractor-trailer was observed speeding and operating in a hazardous manner.
The officer initiated a traffic stop on the commercial motor vehicle for the violations. Upon contact, it was determined the driver had an active warrant for his arrest, the MSP said. The driver was taken into custody without incident, according to the MSP.
Further investigation revealed the driver was in possession of multiple illegal weapons and did not have a concealed pistol license.
MSP said in a statement the following items were seized:
- Fifteen double-edged knives, including three equipped with brass knuckle handles
- Two throwing stars, each with four double-edged sides
- Two additional sets of brass knuckles, including one spiked set
- Five loaded pistols
- One loaded rifle
- One shotgun
- One large double-edged sword with a 32-inch blade
In addition to the weapons violations, troopers said the driver was found to be in possession of two open containers of alcohol. A subsequent inspection of the commercial vehicle also indicated the driver had allegedly falsified his electronic logging device records, the MSP said.
Koroscik was arrested and lodged at the Mackinac County Jail.
On March 26, Koroscik was arraigned in the 92nd District Court in Mackinac County on one count of carrying a concealed weapon.
He was issued a personal recognizance bond.
Additional charges are being sought for other applicable violations, according to the police. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 10.
