DVD: Gyllenhaal in dark side of media’s ‘Nightcrawler’

Jake Gyllenhall in “Nightcrawler”

Nightcrawler | Rated R

Fair warning, you may wish to take a shower after seeing this creepy flick about a thoroughly creepy guy. Jake Gyllenhall is a freelance photographer feeding on the tragedy of others to sell lurid film footage to Los Angeles tabloid TV. The more sensational his footage, the higher the TV station’s ratings, and the more money he earns; the worse the tragedy, the better the payout. Bill Paxton is another photographer and Renee Russo is the news director who doesn’t let facts get in the way of a good story. (The film traces a bit of its DNA to 1992’s The Public Eye, which was inspired by the life of infamous New York City street photographer Weegee.)
