Monroe-Louisiana Delta Community College has received a one-year grant from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration for $112,941 to train drivers.
The goals of the grant are to increase the number of safety-conscious truck drivers the college can train, provide graduates with placement assistance, and provide training opportunities and financial assistance to veterans, active members of the military, and their spouses.
“Considering about 51,000 drivers are needed to meet the national demand in the shipping/trucking industry, LDCC is finding creative ways of making this 4-week training more accessible and affordable,” said Dean Baugh, executive director of economic and workforce development.
In the Monroe Regional Labor Market Area, where the college is situated, truck transportation grew 6.5 percent from 2015-2018 and is expected to grow as much as 9.4 percent by 2024.
