America's midsection could get blasted by the first major winter storm of the season later this week.
AccuWeather is forecasting a powerful storm that could cause trouble for truckers as it is expected to bring strong winds, heavy snow, and even severe thunderstorms to the Plains, Midwest, and western Great Lakes beginning Wednesday.
The weather pattern responsible for the storm is moving inland from the Pacific, depositing heavy rain in California, Washington, and Oregon, and snow across higher elevations. As the storm moves eastward it will encounter colder temperatures and bring snow to areas along its northern edge. Rain and thunderstorms are expected on its southern edge. High winds are forecast for the Dakotas.
The storm is expected to push into the Midwest and Great Lakes on Thursday and into Friday. Temperatures are expected to fall as the storm passes through.
AccuWeather reports, "Where snow falls heavily, when combined with the strong winds, near-blizzard conditions could develop for a time in parts of the region. Those with travel plans during this time that include major routes such as I-90, I-94, I-29, or I-35 to name a few will want to keep a close eye on the forecast and be prepared for treacherous travel conditions and significant disruptions."
