Jack Satterfield mug shotA Mississippi truck driver who caused a fatal 12-vehicle crash that killed three people in October while driving under the influence of alcohol pleaded guilty to several charges Tuesday, including homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence and leaving an accident scene.
The truck driver, Jack Edward Satterfield III, of McComb, will be sentenced in August, according to a report from Penn Live.
The accident occurred Oct. 12 along I-83 in Pennsylvania. Satterfield drove into slowed or stopped traffic near a construction zone, causing an 11-vehicle pileup that killed a 24-year-old, 22-year-old, and an 18-month-old.
Satterfield then fled the scene of the accident but was picked up by police shortly after. He told investigators he’d consumed five double-shot margaritas and two or three beers at a restaurant before driving through Pennsylvania. An empty six-pack of beer and Jagermeister were found in his truck cab, and video from the cab showed that he’d been drinking as he drove from New Jersey, according to the Press and Journal.
Jessica Lybrand, the wife of 24-year-old Zachary Lyband and mother of 18-month-old Elliana, both of whom were killed in the crash, filed a lawsuit against Satterfield; the company he drove for, Greentree Logistics; and J.D. Eckman Inc., the company that was awarded the contract for the construction project, in November. An update on the status of the lawsuit was not immediately available, according to the Press and Journal.
